“When we decided to increase our capacity we specified a Munson Model 700 stainless steel rotary batch mixer with a 140 cu ft (3.96 cu m) capacity. It accommodates our batch weights of 5500 lb (2,500 kg), in excess of what a cone blender can handle. Because the drum rotates on external trunnion rings, there is no internal shaft with seals immersed in the material, eliminating a maintenance and cross-contamination problem. In addition, the mixer evacuates upon discharge with little or no residual, allowing rapid, thorough cleaning.”

The Munson ribbon blender is a stainless steel food grade unit with a capacity of 65 cu ft (1.84 cu m). Powered by a 25 hp (18.65 kw) electric motor, its 2-to-1 agitator length-to-width ratio yields uniform blends in minimum cycle times. Blending capacity is calculated as approximately 70% to 80% of total vessel volume, leaving ample room for material flow on the upswing side of the agitator.

After the successful tests, New England Coffee installed a model 700-TH-25-SS rotary batch blender. The stainless steel blender’s drum has a 25-cubic-foot batch volume and a 500-pound capacity. The unit has an internal sprayline to apply liquid flavoring to the coffee beans. The sprayline and nozzles are mounted off-center in the drum. The mixing action continuously replaces the coffee beans in the spray zone so that a thorough coating occurs with no overspraying. The rotary batch blender’s internal lifters and baffles, which provide the blending action, are bolted to brackets that are welded to the drum wall. For more stringent sanitary applications (such as food and pharmaceutical production), the lifters and baffles can be continuously welded to the drum wall.
